Comox Valley Mediation: If only teens as caregivers had time to play....

Unlike the happy kid above, as parent/teen mediators. we frequently meet teens who are the functional heads of the family, and they're not very happy. It's pretty tough for them looking after parents who may be too sick or dysfunctional to take care of the family, or their siblings. The teen support-givers lose out on teenage friendships and teen lifestyle. Check out their organization. It really fills a gap in the health of our community.

"Ten percent of our youth provide significant care to siblings, parents, grandparents or other relatives/family members. Those youth who receive support from the family, service providers and educators, as well as peers, usually do well. Others don’t. The negative impacts that can last a lifetime will also be covered. These youth are considered to be “at risk” by the mental health communities of several countries.

Many professionals have recognized this huge gap in service delivery but haven’t had the resources or capacity to address these issues. As a result, these youth caregivers remain invisible in our community.

Your host, the Comox Valley Youth as Caregivers Program, a program of the Community Justice Center, is a new initiative to respond to these concerns in our community. It is the newest of 6 programs in Canada.

We encourage your attendance, free of charge."

Comox Valley Mediation: The Value of Kidstart and Shane Douglas' run in support

We have high risk kids in our valley, and kids who are close to becoming high risk kids. Kidstart is a great program. Check out the John Howard Society webpage and learn how you can donate to support this great community service.

Organizations like Kidstart allow those of us who have a big heart an opportunity to contribute with money, whereas, because of age and other societal obligations, we don't seem to be able to find the time to help.

And listen to that big heart of Shane Douglas'....pumping for oxygen all the way from Cape Scott to Courtenay.

Is that guy crazy or what?   http://www.comoxvalleyrecord.com/sports/138952634.html

Comox Valley Mediation: Bladerunners! a superb program for troubled teens

Fifty years ago if I didn't like school I could drive up the road in Toronto and have the choice to work in four or five hundred companies. On the Island I could make more money fishing or in the lumber business than the teachers who irritated me. Those opportunities are few are far between now.

Sometimes the best alternative for medium and high risk teens is Bladerunners. It gives them training, employment, money and an attractive future. Check out http://www.nysa.bc.ca/

RCMP Victim Services in BC

The objectives of the RCMP Victim Services Program are to:
  • Lessen the impact of crime and trauma on victims and their families and to assist them in their recovery;
  • Enhance victim safety and help reduce the risk of further victimization;
  • Increase victims' level of participation in the criminal justice system;
  • Prepare victims acting as witnesses for court proceedings.
From a call for help, to the investigation of a crime, to an offer of a referral, police work in close partnership with victim services organizations to ensure victims of crime receive the support they need without delay.  Google http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/ccaps-spcca/vic-eng.htm  for RCMP assistance.

There are sometimes issues where mediation is appropriate...not necessarily in the case of violent confrontation but in the aftereffects that fracture relationships between offenders and between others associated with the offense.
